It's a bit like how long is a piece of string, but from personal experience I found that standard ABEC 1 to 3 grade steel bearings will last indefinitely in a field only reel. I did smoke a few in the early days, but as my style improved bearing life increased dramatically.
One point, early on when experimenting with oils I found some motor oils would produce a black carbon type residue on the balls. I then discovered when choosing oil for a Mk 1 Golf GTI - my first car with an oil temperature - that the maximum running temperatures for the oil were often exceeded when the car was pushed hard. So, be aware and use oils developed for fishing reels. Neil
