Dave,

The standard UltraMag backplate has 8 positions where you can place the magnets. In original configuration there will be a full compliments of magnets, with 4 showing the dots and 4 not, these will be arranged alternately.

We butcher these lovely little baitcasters to do exactly what they were not designed to do - cast great big lumps of lead down a field.

If you are a competant caster, and are using a UM XL III wth 0.35mm line for the 175gm, then this is a good starting point. Clean a re-lube the bearings with RF-Yellow and place 6 magnets (alternately) but opposite (best to use the holes either side of the screw). If you use thicker oil - RF Red then perhaps 4 magnets, but place them in a cross (12,3,6&9).

You will find that placement and numbers becomes personal preferance.

A bit longer than 5 lines - sorry.
