In response to 525mag clutch, posted by Donagh on Tuesday, 22 February 2005, at 11:20 a.m.

Hey Donagh - If you want to be accurate then use a spring balance to set the drag. However, the pressure to pull say 20lb - which is way beyond anything you are ever likely to use with beach gear in the UK - set when the reel is full is increased exponentially as the line level reduces.

In my experience with big fish you set it so the fish can pull off line relatively easily when it takes the bait then once you have the rod in hand and are playing the fish you adjust the drag to suit the power and agility of the fish.

It's like casting or reel tuning, you cannot say you must set this and that, you can only take a general guideline and learn from experience/mistakes!

Last year on a trip I had a 38in and 43in redfish on 15lb Sufix and several friends had larger fish, mostly with 525Mags and 15lb line - Neil
